Abacela's 10 Year Celebration |
Abacela Winery, one of the many wineries in the Umpqua Valley, recently celebrated their 10th year with good food and great wine. For years, Earl & Hilda Jones pursued their passion for fine wine made from the Tempranillo grape. With the goal to produce a wine in America from that grape, they set out to find the “Spanish-like climate” needed to grow the grape. They found that in the Umpqua Valley. Their winery was christened Abacela, from an old Spanish word meaning “to plant a grape vine”, symbolizing the first Spanish grapevine plantings in the Pacific Northwest. The result is now three extraordinary vineyards comprising 57 acres just south of Roseburg.
The “100 Valleys of the Umpqua” is a rapidly expanding wine grape growing region offering a rich diversity of landscapes and climates providing a wide range of conditions needed to produce a vast array of grape varieties. The region is home to eleven different wineries, providing an outstanding variety. For additional information and a list of local wineries, visit www.umpquawines.com.
